June, pictured above, initially wrote RED HAIR AND GREEN WATERS in the 1940's (on everything from the back of Vegas casino letterhead to random slips of paper), based on her experiences as the only licensed commercial fisher(wo)man during WW2. I have bumped it up quite a bit to give the story-line better continuity and muscle, but I've tried to leave the basic skeleton intact.
It's an interesting read, filled with a little adventure, a little romance and a tremendous amount of information on fishing the coast of Southern California in the '40's. I hope it will be enjoyable - not only as a bit of history, but also as encouragement to anyone who needs a little nudge to go after their dream(s) and realize that life truly is an adventure, and should be lived to its fullest.
The more I've gotten to know about June's actual life and family (from her daughter, my friend), the more interesting and layered she becomes. Not only did she build her own boat, she was a jockey, stripper, teacher to the blind, etc. It's evident that her story should be told, and hopefully seen.
NOTE: I'm STILL (I know, I know...) in the process of turning it into a script - which will incorporate additional historical information, and information about June I've discovered about June which she did not include in her original version. I have also decided to change the ending and make it a bit more... truthful?
